Neuren is developing monoclonal antibodies directed against Trefoil Factors (TFF), peptides that are directly involved in the regulation of autocrine growth hormone.
|
Autocrine growth hormone is produced by cancer cells and has a significant effect on the proliferation and metastasis of a number of cancers including those of the breast, lung, colon, liver, pancreas and prostate. In the first series of experiments in a xenograft model of human breast cancer, the antibodies resulted in almost complete regression of established tumours. |
Increased TFF expression has been found to result in reduced survival in breast, colon, gastric, liver, endometrial, lung and other cancer patients. In particular, TFF expression is strongly associated with tamoxifen resistance in breast cancer independently of HER2-neu expression (the target for Genentech’s Herceptin®, one of the leading cancer drugs used to treat breast cancer). |
